THERE'S NO PRICE ON HER SOUL: NASHVILLE SINGER-SONGWRITER JUDY PASTER'S UNIQUE ARTISTRY CAN'T BE BOUGHT NOR SOLD
In an ever-changing world, it can be difficult to know the right move or the next step to take. When morality and kindness are at an all time low, sometimes it may seem easier to just let go and follow the crowd down the path of least resistance and join them in their indiscretions. Standing firm in your roots and staying true to yourself can feel like a sinking ship when society cries out for unity in the name of conformity, but in a way that is worth your heart and soul. Fortunately, Country-Americana artist Judy Paster knows just who she is and what she has to offer this crazy world whether its via her music or simply her humanity, and in her latest standout single she highlights the highs and lows of living a life where she’s unwilling to put a price on her shimmering soul.
“Price On My Soul” features a bouncy, almost jovial melody juxtaposed against Paster’s warm, yet pensive vocal. The contrast between the two dynamics is reminiscent of the yin and yang of life, the ups and the downs, the good and the bad, and the success and the struggle that she is singing about. Typically, Paster’s music features a traditional sensibility in its classic, folky style of music with a contemporary emotional depth, and this heartfelt tune is no different. The song possesses no frills, short and sweet lyrics that have a mountain of meaning behind them if the listener simply truly pays attention to what is being sung. A song that can say a lot with a little is the mark of true artistry, and “Price on My Soul” can be interpreted in no other way than what Paster is presenting, that “there’s a moment on every road where the sky opens wide, and you have to decide who you really are. [The song] was born right there—where the dust settles, the pressure rises, and your heart has to speak.” As humans, when we’re at the crossroads of the right road versus the easy one, it can often be difficult to know which path to take because sometimes the easy one glitters like it’s paved with gold, but it’s merely a mirage. The real shine is seen in a soul like Paster’s, who can’t be bought and refuses to give in to the demands of an industry that pushes change and what sells down the throats of anyone who dares try to chase a dream and make it. Rarely is it acceptable for an artist in Nashville to just be their true selves, and as artists, our authenticity is our merit…our leg to stand on so to speak. Being a singer-songwriter in the industry in Music City, it takes an impressive level of gumption to stick to your roots and stand firm in your beliefs to make the kind of music you want to make—as Paster expressed, “This song came from a real wrestle. There’s always pressure to fit in or sound like someone else. But peace comes when you stop comparing and start telling the truth. There’s no price on a soul—not mine, not yours. That’s the music I want to make.”
Music, specifically the blues, has often talked about crossroads and making deals with the devil to sell souls in exchange for something presumably brighter and better than what one already possesses—it’s such a human condition. At any given time in history, the crossroad and the devil could represent any number of things or a myriad of difficult moral decisions to be made; however, in this regard, Paster’s single looks at something surface level that cuts so much deeper, which could be beneficial for any new musician to listen to and take to heart about making their mark in the music business. I believe it’s solid advice in song form that says something necessary in the realm of the world we live in today, when cookie-cutter copies of artists and sound abound, TikTok virality and social reach is still pertinent to gaining deals and booking shows, and it takes fifteen people plus AI to write one Top 40 hit. Don’t sell your soul to the devil of an industry that strips away authenticity like the air it breathes—this was a message artists needed in 2025, and for years to come. On a deeper level, “Price on My Soul” cuts to the core and is a lesson in morality the world as it is today needs to hear. As the old adage goes, “all that glitters is not gold.” What looks easy and simple may be a trap. Often, more bad than good comes with taking the “easy road,” and if it’s full of grandness, you know something just ain’t right—and that’s what you want to steer clear of because that grandness is likely a whole bunch of, er…cow manure. With her latest work, Paster succeeded in releasing a single that spoke volumes in few words, yet also transcends meaning with each listen beyond what you think you hear with the first. Very little we hear out of Nashville today is capable of crafting a song with such deep meaning, but Judy Paster is rooted in originality and is a shining example of the types of artists that still abound in Nashville who deserve your time to listen. They’re out there–don’t take the easy road and listen to what the machine sells you…take a different road and find the music that speaks to your soul and moves you like “Price on My Soul” will.
It took me a long while (much longer than I intended, sadly) to truly gather my thoughts on what I felt was such a monumental song, and perhaps it’s because when Paster sent it to me I was personally walking through fire at a crossroads and couldn’t choose which road to take for the next steps in my life—I wasn’t ready to admit that there was no easy way out. Though as I enter 2026 with big plans and a hopeful heart that still sings, it was the right song and the best reminder on what having a genuine, sparkling soul means to me and inspires me to continue to live authentically and move with my best foot forward, even if that means leaving the simple paths behind. I hope after a year of such strife and turmoil for many like 2025 was that “Price on My Soul,” or any specific song out there, inspires you to be the best you that you can be and aspire to share who you truly are with the world throughout this year. I truly hope it does, because the world needs less similarity and more people brave enough to boldly live in their truth. In the world of independent music that surrounds me, I thankfully know I will find many artists who do just that and release some stellar music this year–Judy Paster will no doubt be one of them. Go listen to her latest single and if you’re ever in Nashville, stop in to see a storyteller through song in action!
